The Knight of Pentacles from the Rider/Waite/Smith deck is often called the “work horse card”. It portrays a knight in heavy armor on a black horse. Unlike the other knights, this horse stands still and steady as the knight surveys the fields below him. While still young, the knight is already a mature and responsible person who is concerned with the material world and its assets. Many other attributes are associated with him including reliability, patience, and persistence. This is expressed by the symbolism of his armor. Today’s Journey Tarot’s Youth of Earth shows a young man working as a cave guide. He shares his love of the earth by guiding others through the cave and explaining the natural world to the visitors. He too has chosen to work at a very young age, suggesting the type of adult he will become.

The Rider/Waite/Smith deck’s Ten of Pentacles is filled with symbols. We have an archway with a coat of arms, a checkerboard bordered tapestry, an old man, two adults, a child, and two dogs. The old man’s cloak is covered with grapes and magic symbols. His hair is white, but his beard is gold. He holds a wand in one hand and his other hand is touching the nose of one of the dogs. The female adult wears a red gown and the male a blue over cloak. The pentacles are arranged in a Tree of Life pattern. This card has to do with the legacy that is passed down from generation to generation through families. It could be material wealth, but also could represent the emotional and spiritual inheritance that moves through the circles of life. The child here is the only one paying attention to the old man. In Today’s Journey Tarot’s Ten of Earth, there is a grandfather telling stories to his grandchildren who are engrossed in his tales. Behind them other adults are busily preparing a family meal or engaged in other activities. The insight offered by the family legacy is the true bounty.
