Today’s Journey Tarot Key 20 Awareness – Judgement

The Judgement card in the Rider/Waite/Smith deck is often associated with just that, judgment. But it doesn’t represent judging as much as it does awakening and awareness. Perhaps it does refer to the proverbial “Judgment Day” when we are supposed to come face to face with our lives and receive retribution for our “sins”. The card’s central figure is the archangel, Gabriel blowing his horn. There are gray and naked people rising out of coffins with their arms raised to the angel. Today’s Journey Tarot’s updated version of this card is titled Awareness. The idea here is that something will awaken us to a level of understanding that we didn’t possess before. We may judge our former selves, before we were aware – but at this level of awareness I think that would be unlikely. How can we judge ourselves for what we did not know? Awareness shows a neighborhood block party. All of the participants are engaged in watching a performance on stage. Only one woman becomes aware of a shooting star across the sky. She has reached a new level of consciousness with this recognition which takes her out of the mundane world and into the divine.

Today’s Journey Tarot Key 19 Illumination – The Sun

The Sun card from the Rider/Waite/Smith deck features a child astride a white horse waving a banner. Above him is the large and prominent sun and along a stone wall behind him are a row of sunflowers. This card denotes success and liberation as the child rides forth in positive contentment. The sun itself is the life giving force of the Universe, the vital energy that propels us forward. In the Today’s Journey Tarot card, Illumination, the horse and rider are empowered by the lack of constraint as they ride along a sun drenched beach. The idea here, like The Sun card is that the energy and freedom of this moment is one filled with joy, unlimited power, and true liberation. Illumination offers us freedom to master the world without limitation.

Today’s Journey Tarot Key 18 Intuition – The Moon

The Moon card from the traditional Rider/Waite/Smith deck is profoundly symbolic. It was a difficult card for me to learn. I could easily understand that the moon represents the shadow aspects of us – intuition, dreaming, psychic powers and imagination, but the rest of the symbolism escaped me. Besides the moon in her three phases (and a rather predominant profile) we also have a violet crayfish crawling out of water, a yellow wolf and a dog that is baying at the moon, two pillars, and droplets falling from the sky. There is a path that leads from the water between the animals, and between the pillars and into mountains far into the distance. While all of the meanings associated with the symbolism are fascinating, what a reader needs to know is the basic meaning of the card and what it would mean if it fell in a reading. Expanding Dimensions, the creators of Today’s Journey Tarot chose to show a glowing crystal ball for this card and a reader scrying its wisdom. This goes right to the point of the mysterious and unknown path we must take to bring the intuitive aspect of ourselves into the light and use that perception in everyday life.
