The court cards in the traditional tarot have many symbolic differences, but years ago, as a new reader I had difficulty distinguishing these cards from one another. The King of Swords, like all the kings, sits on his throne. He wears a crown and holds a slightly tilted sword in his right hand. There is a tapestry behind him and two birds fly in the sky above. For a beginner there isn’t much here to determine his personality or the meaning of the card. We can, however relate to the updated Today’s Journey Tarot’s Father of Air. He is depicted as an airline pilot. We can imagine the intelligence, skill, and even courage it takes to choose this career. He must be cool under pressure and detail oriented. This card represents just such a person who can also be a bit detached (airborne) and very logical. He would take control of any situation.
