Today’s Journey Tarot Five of Water – Five of Cups

The Five of Cups in the Rider/Waite/Smith deck is a rather bleak looking card. There is a man wrapped in a black cloak who is gazing down at three spilled cups. Two full, upright cups are behind him. This card usually depicts loss and regret of what “might have been” or what we “might have done”. I usually call this card the “crying over spillled milk” card. While it is easy to see that he is unhappy, there isn’t a clear indication of why. Today’s Journey Tarot’s Five of Water shows a former athlete reliving his “glory days” by thumbing through his old yearbook. The trophy display from long ago suggests that he is still attached to the past and not fulfilling the potential of now.

Today’s Journey Tarot Four of Water – Four of Cups

The Four of Cups from the Rider/Waite/Smith deck shows a man sitting crossed-legged under a tree. He gazes at three cups in front of him and ignores the one being offered from the hand emerging from a cloud. This is one of the traditional cards that I find easy to read. The colors of his clothing symbolically enhance his need to see the opportunity being offered but he protectively crosses his arms over his chest and withdraws instead of opening up. We live in a world today where it is easier than ever to withdraw into our own world. The Four of Water from Today’s Journey Tarot shows a young man walking down a busy street. He is plugged in electronically and ignores the opportunities around him. When we close ourselves off from the world around us, we lose the chance to gain the wisdom of the universe.
