The traditional meaning for the Five of Wands is confusion, struggle and misuse of energy. The Rider/Waite/Smith deck shows five young men brandishing huge staves as if in combat. Their focus and energy is spasmodic, unfocused. Expanding Dimensions, the creators of Today’s Journey Tarot modernized this card by showing a street basketball game with five players. This game has no rules or referee. Each of the players is out to score points no matter what. The intense energy is causing injury (one player has fallen) and stress – as seen on their faces. As long as the game lacks structure or focus, the players are at risk.
