Today’s Journey Tarot Key 5 Tradition – The Hierophant

The Hierophant represents traditional, orthodox teachings. These teachings are known only to him and he decides when they can be shared. There is a lot of symbolism in the Rider/Waite/Smith version of this card. This symbolism can be daunting to a new student. The Hierophant himself has a symbolic gesture, a crown with a letter on the top, a scepter, and there are two crossed keys at his feet. He sits between two pillars – also decorated with symbols. The priests kneel before him with different symbols on their robes. While the rich symbology here is appealing to some, it does take study to understand what is being expressed. Today’s Journey Tarot’s Key 5 Tradition shows a building that could be used for religious worship of any kind. The building is made of stone to represent the closed mindedness of blindly following dogma. The colored glass windows however, suggest that the potential for enlightenment is always present even in the most rigid of traditions and circumstances.

Today’s Journey Tarot Key 4 Law – The Emperor

The Emperor embodies the male principles of abstract law. These are the laws that govern the material world and they are immutable. In the Rider/Waite/Smith deck this card is depicted as a ruler on a stone throne ornamented with ram’s heads. He wears armor beneath his robes and holds a scepter. This was one of the most difficult cards for me to warm up to when I was learning the Tarot years ago. The symbolism seemed harsh and cold. In Today’s Journey Tarot this card is simply called Law. The unyielding order of the Universe is represented by the armillary which charts the stars and planets. The gardener maintains this order by tending to the garden, not by dictating its influence upon our lives. His companion animal looks to him, willingly complying with the natural laws of the Universe because he can sense that he is part of it. This card suggests that the Universe is working the way that it should. It may need some tending at times but we cannot change what is.
